This is a note-for-note transcription of the guitar part on “Samba do Avião”. This is absolutely stunning demonstration of harmonization on guitar that captures the quintessentially Brazilian sense of harmony of the time. Note that in the year of the recording, 1963, meant that the song was still brand new – Jobim wouldn’t record his own version until 1965. This Intro and Outro sections may be quoting Villa-Lobos, the Bachianas Brasilieiras, suites no. 2, movement 4 titled: “O Trenzinho do Caipira”, which translates to “The Little Train of the Caipira”; specifically quoting the train-like sound. This suggests that Baden Powell’s arrangement can be interpreted as the Modernist imagery of a steam-powered train passing by. Enjoy!
