song: Visa från Utanmyra (original take, 1962-02-28)
artist: Jan Johansson
album: Jazz på svenska (1964)
origin: traditional Swedish folk song

acoustic piano: Jan Johansson
double bass: Georg Riedel

This is a complete and thorough transcription of Jan Johansson’s piano-Jazz classic. The song title “Visa från Utanmyra” simply means “Song from Utanmyra” in Swedish; Utanmyra being the name of a small town in central Sweden. The song gets its title from the later lyrics by Björn Lindroth, as opposed to the earlier 18th-century lyrics by Olof von Dalin, “O tysta ensamhet”, meaning “O, Quiet Solitude”. The album title “Jazz på svenska (svenska folklåtar)” means “Jazz in Swedish (Swedish folk songs)” and re-interprets Swedish folk songs in the vernacular of 1960s Jazz; this infuses Johansson’s classical voice-leading with elements of Blues and Modal Jazz. Enjoy!
