"Earth Science" is a free jazz tune letting the jazz trio venture into more free-jazz territory akin to Ornette Coleman’s music. In the context of the album's song sequence, it is a contrasting breath of fresh air. It is also an opportunity for Julian Lage to step back from the frontman role and let the band go nuts. Enjoy!

Check out this fast live version (see video to the left) of the live trio executing the tune at the jazzahead! Festival 2017.

Also, see this little video lesson in Guitar World in which Julian Lage explains the idea and intention behind the song:

From Guitar World June 2019 All That Jazz by Julian Lage ENCOURAGING DEVELOPMENTS Julian Lage explains the inspiration behind his original song "Earth Science," which requires him to sit out - stop playing! - and let the rhythm section take the lead.
