song: Nocturne
artist: Julian Lage
album: Arclight (2016)
writer: Spike Hughes (1933)

electric guitar: Julian Lage
double bass: Scott Colley
(drums, percussion, vibraphone: Kenny Wollesen)

This tune was originally composed by arranger, composer and double bassist Spike Hughes and was recorded in New York, 1933, during his renowned productive recording years. The original recording (click the upper video) features a mixed bag of musicians from the great local orchestras of the time; the ensemble was named Spike Hughes and His Negro Orchestra for this recording session, prominently featuring the great tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, who played the lead melody, and who is seen sketched in the video.
