I am very happy to share with you the third installment in my Etude series! This piece, nicknamed "Banksy" was so far the most challenging etude to play. The idea behind this is that I wanted an etude with a constant quarter note pulse in the chords while the bass played around it, hinting at a 5:4 kind of groove.

song: Etude #3: “Banksy
artist: Julian Lage
performance: Guitar Etude Video Blog on YouTube (2010)
writer: Julian Lage

electric jazz guitar: Julian Lage

This is a detailed transcription of the “Etude #3” - the third etude in Julian Lage’s YouTube mini-series. This composition was also recorded with The New Gary Burton Quartet in 2011 (see video below).

This is arguably the hardest of the etudes. The composition is based variations of an off-beat bass line under a quarter-beat staccato chords. This is a wonderful piece for practicing poly-rhythms on the guitar and for the hybrid-picking that it necessitates. Enjoy!
