Julian Lage tells the story behind each song on the album in a series of interview clips. Here is the clip for “Ocala”, posted on his YouTube channel.

(drums: Kenny Wolleson)

This is a transcription of the guitar and the bass parts on “Ocala”. Harmonically, this is an incredibly fun chord progression that takes surprising steps in and out of F# Major and its neighboring keys. The groove and instrumentation is reminiscent of Calypso and Americana ballads from the 1950s, like “Save the Last Dance for Me” by The Drifters and “Jamaica Farewell” by Harry Belafonte, and it might be no coincidence that the tune is named after the city in Florida. All this is of course infused with the Jazzy approach to harmony and Julian Lage’s melodic improvisation. Enjoy!
